The Retail Safety & Security Guide is a province-wide resource created collaboratively by the Toronto Police Service, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Retail Council of Canada. It offers practical, expert-informed strategies to help retail businesses reduce vulnerability to crime, strengthen instore safety, and better protect staff and customers. 

The guide provides advice on: 

  • Preventing and responding to common retail crimes such as robbery, break and enter, fraud, and shoplifting 
  • Addressing situations involving aggressive customers, suspicious individuals, intoxicated persons, or individuals in crisis 
  • Implementing measures to reduce workplace violence and support safer retail environments

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) focuses on how the layout, visibility, and maintenance of a space can help reduce opportunities for crime.
