Winter Snow Removal and By-law Compliance
The Town of Penetanguishene wishes to remind all residents and business owners that during the winter season, the primary objective of municipal snow clearing and removal operations is to maintain safe and passable roadways by removing snow in an efficient and timely manner.
This essential service can be significantly impeded when snow is deposited onto roadways or along the edge of the road by private individuals or businesses. When this occurs, municipal snowplows may be required to revisit streets to remove the additional snow in order to meet the Town’s minimum maintenance standards.
Residents and business owners are advised that depositing snow or ice onto Town roadways or boulevards is prohibited under the Town of Penetanguishene Traffic, Parking and Use of Highways By-law No. 2022‑02, as amended.
Relevant provisions of the by-law include:
Section 9 – Obstruction of Highways, Ditches, and Culverts
- 9.1 No person shall obstruct, encumber, or foul any highway under the jurisdiction of the Town by any means whatsoever without the approval of the Director of Public Works.
- 9.2 Without limiting the generality of subsection 9.1, an obstruction or fouling of a highway includes the depositing of snow or ice on the roadway.
Section 10.3
- No person shall deposit, or cause to be deposited, ice or snow on a boulevard that does not adjoin their property, including snow that is pushed or deposited across a roadway.
The Town reminds residents and business owners that the unauthorized depositing of snow or ice on roadways or boulevards may result in enforcement action under the by-law, including fines and prosecution.
