Town of Penetanguishene Lowers Flags in Honour of the Passing of Town of Midland Councillor Jim Downer

The Town of Penetanguishene extends its deepest condolences to the municipality of Midland for the sudden passing of Councillor Jim Downer.  We understand that his passing has left a great void in the community of Midland, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

“On behalf of my Council colleagues, staff and the residents of the town, I offer my sincere condolences to Jim’s family and friends,” said Mayor Doug Rawson. "Flags at Town Hall are lowered to half-mast in recognition of his passing and his years of service to our neighbouring community".

On behalf of the entire Town of Penetanguishene community, we express our deepest sympathies and stand ready to provide any assistance and support that may be needed during this difficult time.

It is with deep sorrow that the Town of Midland has lowered all Municipal flags to half-mast following the passing of Councillor Jim Downer. Councillor Downer passed away this morning, June 27, 2024. Our hearts and condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues and the rest of our community.

Councillor Downer’s tenure as a pillar in our community spanned almost 30 years, sitting on Town Council as a Councillor, Deputy Mayor, and Mayor. He is known to many for his compassionate leadership, his dedication to the growth of our community and his genuine love for Midland. Councillor Downer’s passing will leave an absence in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
