Town of Penetanguishene Disheartened with Significant Damage in Therrien Park

The Town of Penetanguishene is disheartened after over 50 shrub and tree seedlings were illegally pulled from Therrien Park between May 17th and May 26th.

“A total of 275 seedlings were planted in part of Therrien Park by local volunteers, Severn Sound Environmental Association staff, and upwards of 100 elementary school students only two weeks ago as part of a naturalization project,” says Sherry Desjardins, Director of Recreation and Community Services. "This senseless act of destruction is hurtful to our community's efforts to enhance and protect our natural environment."

The Town has reported the damage to the police, who are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward and contact the Southern Georgian Bay OPP.

The Town is also requesting that visitors to Therrien Park be extra vigilant and watch for any suspicious activity.

“This project is partly funded through the Province’s Great Lakes Local Action Fund and planting of seedlings is part of a larger habitat restoration plan for the site. We are proud to work with the Town and volunteers and will continue to support the amazing young students whose environmental leadership is critical to the sustainability of this community” says Julie Cayley, Severn Sound Environmental Association Executive Director.

The Town of Penetanguishene is committed to maintaining and improving the natural spaces within its borders for the benefit of all residents, and it is disheartening to see such a senseless act of vandalism. The Town, along with the Severn Sound Environmental Association will work to replace the damaged trees in our efforts towards environmental conservation.
