Town of Penetanguishene Announces Participation in Safe Community Project Zero Campaign

The Town of Penetanguishene is thrilled to announce that our Fire Department has been selected to participate in this year’s Safe Community Project Zero campaign and initiative aimed at enhancing safety in our community through the distribution of vital combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Safe Community Project Zero – a public education campaign sponsored by Enbridge Gas and administered by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, is providing more than 14,500 free combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms to residents in 75 communities across Ontario.  This initiative specifically targets high-risk individuals, including seniors, people with disabilities, and those facing financial challenges, ensuring that life-saving devices reach those who need them most.

As a proud recipient of the 2024 Safe Community Project Zero campaign, our department has received 126 Kidde Canada 10-year, worry-free combination smoke/carbon monoxide alarms, with a retail value of approximately $8,100. These alarms will be distributed to residents in our community, focusing on those who are at heightened risk.

“This partnership with Enbridge Gas through the Safe Community Project Zero campaign, allows us to enhance safety and protect our community,” said Chief Renaud. “We are grateful for this opportunity to make a meaningful impact and ensure that our residents have the tools they need to stay safe.”

“The best way to reduce potential exposure to carbon monoxide is to properly maintain fuel-burning equipment,” said Grant Kilpatrick, Manager Operations, GTA West, Enbridge Gas. “These alarms are a critical second line of defense against carbon monoxide poisoning, known as ‘the silent killer’. We’re proud to support our communities, and raise awareness and help Ontarians implement these protection strategies.”

The distribution of these alarms will begin in the coming weeks, and residents who believe they may qualify for a free alarm are encouraged to reach out to our fire department for more information.
