Main Street Reconstruction Update - June 15, 2018

Main street reconstruction

It truly feels as though summer has now joined us in 2018. The increased temperatures have somehow contributed to our contractor finding yet another gear which has led to great strides this week. The buildings between Water Street/Simcoe Street and Robert Street have now been pre-serviced by the temporary watermain which means that the old watermain has been isolated for removal. Completing the work on the hill comes with an inherent risk that is directly related to Mother Nature so let’s hope she is on our side for the next four (4) weeks while the steepest part of the job is completed. JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending June 15th, 2018:

  • Temporary Watermain connected and existing watermain shut down between Water Street/Simcoe Street and Robert Street
  • Sidewalk installed from Brock Street to Tessier Lane on the East side
  • Sanitary Bypass at Simcoe and Water Street relocated to Robert Street
  • Excavation and Granular Placement on Main Street south from Tessier Lane in preparation for the asphalt placement
  • Watermain installation started at Tessier Lane and continued south to Water Street/Simcoe Street
  • Asphalt Pulverized or Milled from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street
  • Light Standards Removed from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street
  • Sanitary, Storm, and Water services nearly completed to Water Street/Simcoe Street on Main Street; and
  • Sanitary Main and Storm Main installed on Main Street up to the Water Street/Simcoe Street intersection.

The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of June 18th, 2018 to June 22nd, 2018:

  • Continue Sanitary Main and Stormwater Main installation from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street;
  • Sanitary, Storm, and Water services from Water Street/Simcoe Street heading south on Main Street;
  • Prepare driveways and entrances for new asphalt from Wolfe Street to Tessier Lane;
  • Flushing and testing of watermain from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street;
  • Concrete Road Base removal on Main Street from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street; and,
  • Excavation, Granular placement and Sub-drain placement south on Main Street beyond Water Street/Simcoe Street.

If you are a building owner in the upcoming phases of the reconstruction and would like to have a water service size increase or require special considerations for your servicing, please reach out to the Town as soon as possible to accommodate these requests in advance. We have communicated the needs of the building owners that have already come forward to JB Enterprises.

It has been brought to the attention of Town staff that the driving behavior of some motorists in the area of the reconstruction and around the detour routes has been in contravention of the highway traffic act. As we welcome tourists and visitors to our beautiful Town, it is our responsibility as residents and locals to lead by example so please do not drive the wrong way on a One-Way Street. This may expedite your travels, but it puts the pedestrians and other vehicles in the area at a much higher risk. Let’s work to keep each other safe!

A map has been produced which highlights the different parking options if you plan on visiting any of our local shops and businesses during the current phase of the reconstruction.

We continue to thank you for your patience and continued support during this work. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
