Main Street Reconstruction Update - August 17, 2018

Main Street Reconstruction Update - August 17, 2018

JB Enterprises Ltd. has had another productive week while working to install the Sanitary Main in the deepest location required for the entire project.  In addition, they are working to complete the underground infrastructure at the intersection of Poyntz Street and Main Street.  JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending August 17, 2018:

  • Sidewalk completed on both sides of Main Street from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street and angle parking road base completed;
  • Traffic controls placed near Water Street/Simcoe Street Intersection;
  • Completed Water Main and services from Robert Street intersection south towards Poyntz Street. Flushing and Testing ongoing;
  • Sanitary Main and Storm Main including services complete from Robert Street to Poyntz Street;
  • Road bed construction continue on Main Street Heading south from Robert Street toward Poyntz Street;
  • Temporary Water Main tie ins from Edward Street to Thompson Road; and,
  • New Water Main Tie in to Existing Water Main at the Poyntz Street Intersection.

The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of August 20th, 2018 to August 24th, 2018:

  • Remove Sanitary Bypass from its current location at Poyntz Street and potentially relocate to Edward Street if necessary;
  • Continue Sanitary Main heading South from Jeffery Street;
  • Start Boulevard Stones on West side of Main Street from Water Street to Robert Street;
  • Complete Water Main Flushing and Testing;
  • Continue works at Simcoe Street and Water Street intersection;
  • Start Curbs from Robert Street to Poyntz Street;
  • Complete Stormwater Works;
  • Continue installation of Traffic Lights Base and Poles in the Robert Street and Main Street Intersection;
  • Excavate and Place Bases for the Bollards that will eventually create the flexible boulevard; and,
  • Place Granulars on Main Street from Robert Street continuing south.

On many occasions, the Town has received comments and concerns relating to the speeding, aggressive driving or disobeying of street signs.  We have sent messaging relating to this topic multiple times but feel it is equally important that residents know that a phone line exists with the Ontario Provincial Police to report observed driving related issues.  By using the toll free number 1-888-310-1122, you can report your concerns and the information is tracked and monitored by the Ontario Provincial Police.  This provides them with the information to react if necessary.

As previously mentioned this week, the intersection of Water Street/Simcoe Street and Main Street has been closed to allow the concrete works to be completed as well as the finishing paving stones.  This closure will be in place for the next seven (7) to ten (10) working days.  Please use the Robert Street intersection to get Eastbound or Westbound during this time.

The Town is currently working with the Village Square Mall Ownership, JB Enterprises and other groups to have a temporary access installed to the mall property.  That being said, driving through the mall property to solely access Poyntz Street is a serious risk to the many pedestrians that freely move around the parking lot.  If you are not intending on using the services or stores that are in the Village Square Mall property, please refrain from using this as a shortcut.  Following the posted detour routes is a much safer alternative.

With the reconstruction moving into the top end of the Main Street, there is restricted access to travel lanes and even road closures where necessary.  For this reason, the Town is working with JB enterprises and other parties to institute a truck route detour which will bring delivery trucks into the Town via Golflink Road and Overhead Bridge Road.  The goal of this route is to ensure the delivery trucks have access to each property without having to navigate through detours which exist on small residential streets.  If you are a business owner, please let your delivery companies know about the route (map attached) to ensure safe deliveries.

Thank you to everyone for your continued patience and understanding.  Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
